i wake at the first cringe of morning
Sheriff Graham Humbert, detective extraordinaire, was almost always on the clock. He didn't mind, though. He loved his job, hunting down criminals in the small town of Storybrooke, Maine. While it was mostly kids shoplifting a place, he was prepared for just about anything, even if he doubted anything more to happen in the little town that he grew up in. However, that meant boredom. His job was incredibly easy, most of the time. The usual culprits were usually the ones who did just about anything (there was a group of boys that always were on the ‘suspects’ list when robberies took place, and if they weren’t too big of robberies, he would usually let it go). Too easy.
But that didn’t stop him from kicking back at lunch time, and sitting, feet on the desk a nice sandwich he packed this morning in his hand. Peanut butter and jelly. Ah, his favorite. Well, not his favorite. Scratch that. He couldn’t actually taste it. It was odd. But… in the last couple of days, ever since Emma Swan arrived in town, he’d began to notice he didn’t feel anything, taste anything, and… it almost felt like he was missing a piece of him. As if there were a hole.
Sheriff badge hooked on his belt, Graham had his arms crossed, ready to spring into action if a call came in, but otherwise enjoying his lunch as much as he could. Maybe he’d meet up with Regina tonight. Perhaps she could make him feel something. But really, even that was getting… tiring. The only thing that really felt… interesting, felt different, felt challenging was the newcomer, Emma Swan.

When the lunch hour hit, Emma decided to step out of the office for a bit to head over to Granny’s for lunch. Since Henry was at school at the moment, she would be enjoying her lunch alone. When she arrived at Granny’s, she took a seat upon one of the empty stools and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with French fries along with a cup of hot chocolate. It felt nice to get a moment to herself. Even though the work day was slow at the moment, she couldn’t deny the tension between herself and the sheriff. They had gotten on the wrong foot when Emma had first arrived to Storybrooke, but she wasn’t going to exactly talk to him about what had happened. She was just lucky that he decided to give her a job at the Sheriff’s station, but he probably did so in order to keep a close eye on her. But Emma did enjoy helping other people out with their problems so she gladly accepted the job. Once Emma was done with her meal, she paid for it and exited the restaurant to head back to the Sheriff’s station since her lunch break was about to be over. Once she got back, she took off her jacket and hung it up on one of the coat hooks before walking into the office. “Hey Graham. Have we gotten any calls since I left?” She asked curiously. She would have invited the Sheriff to go get lunch with her, but she knew that he usually kept to himself and ate his lunch here at the office. She was itching to get into the field if any calls had come. Graham Humbert

i wake at the first cringe of morning
When Emma Swan entered the office, Graham smiled. He had told Regina he gave Swan the job to watch her, to keep a better eye on her than he would be able to if she was just walking around. Regina wasn’t too happy telling him a job gave her just another reason to stay. And really, that was what Graham was going for. The mystery that was Emma Swan was yet to be solved. He wanted to figure her out, why she felt so different. And in a way, he really did like her, despite getting off on the wrong foot, her judging him for his affair with the mayor, her yelling at him because of it, but that was all water under the bridge. He wondered why he cared that she cared about the whole situation.
“It seems the criminals are taking the day off,” Graham said, trying to fade his smile that just wouldn’t disappear. He leaned forward and stood up to stretch his legs, having finished his sandwich. “It’s been pretty quiet since the school vandalism.” He was meaning the one that made headlines that he had gone to stop, captured half the culprits, who then later escaped while he was getting food for the kid from Granny’s. He felt bad for the kid, mostly because he understood his circumstances, though he was disappointed he turned to vandalism, which was nothing regarding survival, unlike some of the other things that the kid had done. “A patrol wouldn’t hurt, though. What do you say, Swan?” At least then he could get out of the office. He loved his job, but sticking around in an office wasn’t what he loved about it.

There was an upside and a downside to not have any calls at the moment. Emma wouldn’t be swamped in work, but then again she would be forced to sit around the office waiting for a call to come in. Not that she didn’t mind of course. She could always look through the paper work to see if there was anything she needed to complete. “I suppose. Maybe they decided to give up because they know that they would get caught.” She said with a shrug of her shoulders and let out a laugh. Storybrooke didn’t exactly have a high crime rate since the town was so small, but it still didn’t change the fact that there were criminals around. That would probably never change. “Perhaps they just want to keep a low profile for the time being until the vandalism story blows over.” She said. It was slightly fresh and she was sure that eventually, the calls would come in. When Graham suggested a patrol, she nodded in response. “I agree. I think going out on a patrol would be a good idea.” She said. The best part about the job in Emma’s eyes was putting away people that didn’t belong on the streets. She wanted to protect people and in a way, she was glad that Graham had given her the job. She didn’t want to disappoint him and she wanted to show him that she was worth his time. Besides, it was also a nice day outside to do a patrol. To be cooped up in the office all day on such a nice day would have been terrible. She took her jacket from one of the hooks and put it on. She waited for him before walking out of the office with Graham. Graham Humbert

Emma had made a good point. Laying low while the school thing blew over would probably be the smartest thing, because at this point they were on high alert. Especially when it came to tracking down that girl who had been involved in the vandalism. That was looking like it wasn’t going to happen. She’d broken Oliver out, but then he simply came back. Graham figured that it wasn’t Oliver’s idea to escape and only went as an unwilling accomplice. After all, he wouldn’t get his banana pancakes if he hadn’t come back. However, it wasn’t like he could do much with the girl anyways, she would escape just like she had escaped when he ran after her during the vandalism, and when she took Oliver with her.
Even though he didn’t feel like it was a funny thing, Graham laughed slightly nonetheless when Emma had. It was awkward when he didn’t find things funny, just because he didn’t feel like they were funny, even though he thought he should be laughing. He thought he should have a good sense of humor, with a focus in light humor, but he didn’t feel it. He didn’t feel anything. Unless he was around Emma. If he brushed against her, he would feel something. He would actually feel something and that was weird. Not even when he was with Regina could he feel anything, but Emma was different. Or he was going insane. That was completely and totally possible.
“Alright then, let’s head out.” Graham smiled, ever so slightly brushing against her as they headed out the door to his car, just so he could feel that feeling again when he was in contact with her. “We’ll head over down main street, and make a loop around the residential streets, see if anything is going on.” After all, they just had lunch and nothing to do, might as well go on a cruise looking for trouble. He took the driver’s seat and waited for Emma, before starting up the car and pulling out. “If you don’t mind me asking, why did you decide to stay in Storybrooke, Emma?” He felt he knew the answer, but he might as well ask to hear what she had to say.

For the most part, Emma didn’t really know that things were off with Graham. Obviously she wasn’t aware of the fact that he didn’t have his heart. If someone told her that, he wouldn’t believe that person. There were “heartless” people in the world, but she didn’t think that the term could actually be literal. But she did notice Graham slightly brush against her when they were getting ready to leave. She just pushed that aside and thought that it was an accident. She wasn’t aware of the fact that he did it intentionally. After they exited the room, they both walked outside and headed towards his cruiser. “That sounds like a good plan to me.” She stated in response and got into the passenger’s side of the car. She closed the door and put on her seatbelt before Graham pulled out and the two of them began their route. She didn’t really expect to find anything, but getting out of the office to go on a patrol was better than being cooped up inside waiting for someone to give them a call. Things had been quiet for the time being, but things would eventually pick up again once enough time passed. Emma looked out the window as Graham drove. She was on the lookout to see if they would end up passing anything suspicious. The atmosphere was silent until Graham broke the silence by asking her a question. It through her slightly off and she was surprised because she wasn’t expecting that kind of question from him. Her gaze turned away from the window to look at him while he drove. “I decided to stay for Henry.” She said in response. She was certain that he knew that Henry was her kid. Regina must have informed him to some extent since she did see them together. “He didn’t want me to leave. I was going to, but I guess I’m going to stay in town for a bit longer.” She said with a slight shrug of her shoulders. She didn’t know how long she was going to stay for, but she didn’t just want to be there and leave the next day. She owed Henry a lot, but she didn’t know how to be a mother. She had given him up so he could have a good chance at a great life. But she couldn’t deny the fact that something felt off about the town. “Why? Do you plan on kicking me out of town anytime soon?” She asked, a playful smirk forming on the corner of her lips. Graham Humbert

i wake at the first cringe of morning
Graham was one of those guys who believed what he saw. And the premise that he had something wrong with him was not far. But the actual cause he would laugh in the face of at first. Graham was fairly open-minded, but magic was ridiculous. But if the evidence presented itself and it was compelling, he might start believing in magic. His heart was beating in his chest, but that didn’t mean that he also was ‘heartless’ and he no longer had the heart that was essentially his soul. If he had enough evidence, he would probably believe it, because this emptiness could not be real. The only thing that felt real was Emma Swan, but that couldn’t be natural either. However, she was the only one who made him feel anything, and that was a miracle. He was going to take advantage of it too. He wanted to learn more about Emma, and what she was doing here, despite the ongoing war between her and the mayor about their son. Graham just saw evidence. He figured that Emma stayed for Henry, but he didn’t understand why she would’ve left him in the first place. However, coming out and asking that would probably not be his best course at the moment. No, but it was something he found curious about Emma. Frankly, he was curious about Emma in general, but this was one of those specific things he found so very interesting about her. How she was willing to fight for a boy she had just met, even if she was his mother. Perhaps it was a mother thing, or perhaps it was an Emma thing, or perhaps it was both. Still, he found it interesting.
“Oh no, I don’t plan on anything like that soon. I just want… to make sure you want to stay.” It was like he had a feeling something bad was going to happen soon. Whether it was that he was going to die, or something worse was coming to Storybrooke. Feelings didn’t happen often and when they did they were strong. It was like he could sense something bad coming. “Just in case… something were to happen.”

When Emma was assigned the job, she didn’t question it. She was just glad that she got a job opportunity in the first place so she could support herself while she was staying in town. She wasn’t aware of the fact that Regina wanted Graham to keep an eye on her for the time being while she was staying in the town. At the end of the day, everything she did was for her son Henry. She wanted to stay in Storybrooke for him so they could get close to each other. She felt bad not really knowing anything about him, but she did care for him. He was her son after all. Even though she hadn’t met him until he arrived at her apartment in New York, she couldn’t deny the fact that she wanted to be in his life. That feeling grew with each passing day. For once, she actually had someone in her life that cared about her and she cared about Henry, but the mayor was getting in the way. Regina was skeptical about Emma just showing up out of the blue. Obviously Emma didn’t want to hate Regina, but she was possessive about Henry and believed that she should have all of the say because Emma ended up giving him up. A part of her wished that she didn’t give him up, but she knew that his best chance of a good life would happen if she gave him up. “You want to make sure that I want to stay?” She asked curiously. “That’s surprising since you’re so close to Regina and she isn’t quite exactly fond of me.” The blonde stated in response, a soft chuckle slipping passed her lips. Then she raised an eyebrow when he stated in case something were to happen. “What do you mean exactly?” She asked curiously. There must have been something going on for him to say something like that. Was there something that she needed to be aware about? She couldn’t deny the fact that there were some weird stuff happening in Storybrooke, but she thought it was just because this was a town that she didn’t understand. She didn’t believe that everyone was a fairy tale character and some had dark pasts. Emma was in for a rude awakening when things would finally begin to unfold. Graham Humbert

Ah yes, the fact he was close to Regina. He wondered all the time why he kept going back to her. It was always a curious thing for him. He didn’t understand it, and well, he was starting to want to put an end to the whole relationship. Graham really did not actually like Regina all that much, and there really was no feeling when he was around Regina. In fact, he almost felt colder when Regina was around. And yet, if he tried to do something she didn’t want, he just… couldn’t deny her request. He wanted to be free from whatever control she had over him. He wanted to be his own man and stand up. He wanted… to be a bit like Emma Swan, who was willing to stand up to Gold, to Regina, to stand up to anyone who stood in her way. She was brave, and Graham admired it. She was a far greater person than he ever had been.
“She’s not,” Graham admitted with a short chuckle looking over at Emma before his eyes quickly darted back to the road to make sure he didn’t run into anything. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t like you, Swan. You’re probably the best deputy I’ve ever had. Well, the only one. But I wouldn’t want to lose you.” But then she asked what exactly he had meant when he added that last part. Graham sighed, glancing over at Emma then back at the road again. He pulled over to the side of the road for a moment, this needing his utmost attention at the moment. “It’s just a feeling, but I think something bad is going to happen. I don’t know what, but I can… feel something is about to happen. Something big. And… really now is your chance to leave, before whatever comes, comes.”
