Fairy Tale History:
king uther pendragon the king of camelot, couldn’t help but fall in love with his enemies wife. she was the most beautiful thing that he had ever seen, he loved her from the moment he first saw her at the side of his foe king gorlois. he sent secret letters to the queen igraine; to his surprise she sent letters back, the two fell in love. they would meet in secret and that is how the queen became pregnant. uther begged her to leave her husband but she said that would find her with the help of magic. the only way they could be together was if her husband was killed. so the two planned to kill gorlois… they planned a war. uther started attacking his lands to get close enough to the other king to kill him. meanwhile igraine knew that gorlois was getting suspicious of her pregnancy so when it came to the day she gave birth she had her servant find a baby who had been born dead. she sent her son to live with uther and passed off the dead child as the child that she had given birth to. she had to protect her son, she knew with one look at the child gorlois would know he wasn’t his heir.
when a prophecy was read saying that the first-born son of uther would be the “once and future king” the child had a mark on it’s back. uther knew that there was a target on the small child, gorlois still suspected that the new baby in uther’s castle. he sent assassins to kill the only heir to the kingdom. he also had to protect the child from his wife, his own queen who he had almost all forgotten about because of his love for igraine. his new wife wanted the child dead just as much as gorlois. she wanted her sons to be king one day and by the way uther was talking he was going to legitimize the bastered son. when uther got word that his wife was planning to have the child killed he knew the castle was not a safe place for his child…. the once and future king, he sent the son he loved away… it was not time for prince arthur… not yet.
arthur was set to a place no one would ever look, a farmer’s home in the middle of no where. this is where arthur’s story would start not the son of a king but the son of a poor farmer. he didn’t grow up with fancy parties or grand halls but in a small home that wasn’t big enough for the whole family, but there was something he did grow up with and that was love. his parent’s showed him just the same amount of love that their natural born children were shown. arthur didn’t even know he wasn’t their natural son; it was a piece of information they didn’t want to share with him.
he had two brothers and a sister, he was the eldest but not by much. he was less than a year older than his brother gwaine. his other brother edward was two years younger and his sister was eight years younger. the brothers were all very close especially arthur and gwaine, they always spent their time together if one was in a trouble the other one wasn’t too far away.
hard work was something that their father took great pride in, they didn’t have much but they worked all day long. arthur grew up farming and building, usually people would come to their father asking for his two sons to help with labor around the town. the often helped fix homes, bridges, barns, and whatever labor was too hard for old men and women. they didn’t do the jobs for money; they did it to help their fellow village people. that was another value that their father instilled in his sons helping out your neighbor, you help them and one day they will help you. kindness is what makes the people love you; if people love you they will help you.
on the rare occasion that the boys weren’t working they were trying to romance the ladies of the town. the boys were both very good-looking young men and had an easy time with most women. this also got the brothers into a lot of trouble with fathers or older brother’s of the women; these troubles usually ending with a brawl and than a lecture from their father. arthur and gwaine would even get into brawls over the same woman at times but nothing could come between them. in free time that wasn’t spent with women they also spar with old swords. arthur had a natural talent for sword fighting, he knew how to move and he had natural talent in anticipating his brother’s moves.
their father could see the boys’ interest in swords and got them an internship at the blacksmith, the boys would work for the blacksmith and the blacksmith would teach them how to fight. the blacksmith was a retired knight trained by the king’s guard and even he was impressed by arthur’s natural talent just as much as his brother was. he even told arthur that he could go to camelot to be a knight; arthur was confused after all you could only become a knight if you were of noble blood. the blacksmith shook his head and said the kingdom was on hard times, they had been fighting a war for the same amount of time that arthur had been alive. so many knights had lost their lives that the king had lifted the ban on noble born knights. the blacksmith even told gwaine he was good enough to be a knight, that the brothers would do great things together.
the brothers rushed home to tell their father but their father didn’t seem half as excited as they were. he told them that gwaine could go but arthur had to stay behind. arthur didn’t understand why couldn’t he? his father only said that he was meant for something else… not the life of a knight. the closeness of the boys didn’t keep gwaine in town, all he wanted to do was be a knight and with his brother’s approval he left for camelot.
for the next few years the war got worse, battles weren’t far off from their home and arthur continued to beg his father for his blessing to leave the farm. all he wanted to do was protect the land that he loved but his father never gave in. he told arthur being a blacksmith was a steady job he wasn’t meant to go off to be a knight.
one-day word reaches the village that the king’s two sons have been killed in a battle, there were no longer heirs to the kingdom and the king’s health was failing. this either meant that the kingdom was set to lose the war or the king would name someone to take his place as king. arthur headed no ear to the village gossip even when a knight came to the blacksmith with even more; the king had sent word out that he had a son. a son whom he named as his heir, he had his wizard cast a spell on a sword, a sword meant for a leader. the sword was placed in a rock; only his heir would be able to pull the sword from the stone. arthur just saw it as gossip; the news wouldn’t change his life all that much. many men traveled through their town on their way to camelot to try and pull the sword from the stone. one-day gwaine came to the village to visit his family, he was atop a horse and even had a nice sword of his own… he was a knight. arthur couldn’t help be jealous; all he wanted was to be a knight. when gwaine was returning to camelot two nights later arthur snuck out with him. he loved his father but he couldn’t hold arthur back anymore. smithing wasn’t something that arthur wanted to do for the rest of his life.
the two arrived in camelot four days later the city was ruled by the ward of the king morgana le fay. she was the daughter of a knight who the king had seen as a brother, when her mother died of fever and her father died in was morganna was brought to the castle to be raised by uther. on his deathbed he named her stewart until the heir would return to camelot. the two brothers were excited finally being together once again.
the two went to the local pub to grab a drink and something to eat, there they met other men who were already drunk, they said they were off to pull the sword from the stone all convinced that they were the heir to the kingdom. jokingly gwaine suggested that the two try and pull the sword from the stone and arthur laughed and said fine, after all they were due for a good laugh. the line wasn’t all that long, by now most men in the city had tried to pull the sword from the stone. the men from the tavern tried first and one after another they failed to remove the sword. it came to gwaine’s turn and just as the men before him he failed, he was laughing when he returned to arthur jokingly he told arthur to go take the sword, it was time to be the king. laughing arthur stumbled up to the sword feeling the effects of the alcohol. he glanced at the young man sitting nearby watching the men, clearly annoyed and bored. “so i just grip it and pull?” he asked, the young man rolled his eyes and nodded. “what’s your name mate?” the young man rolled his eyes again and mumbled “merlin, now would you try and be on your way”. once again arthur laughed and gripped the sword and pulled. at first nothing, but then the sword slipped causing arthur to fall back slightly. he took his hands off the sword and looks at it than grabs the handle with his right hand and pulled the sword from the stone with one hand. arthur’s eyes opened wide and he looked to the young man who he had just spoken to merlin. merlin’s mouth was open wide in utter shock, arthur than looked to gwaine who shared the same look. the town square was in silence, something that it never was. slowly cheering erupted along with “god save the king” chanting over and over again.
merlin finally got off his perch and walked over to arthur, he told him to follow him arthur motioned for gwaine to follow and the two followed the young man into the castle. merlin informed him that he was the sorcerer of the kingdom, trained by the best sorcerer that had ever been in the halls of camelot. he was bringing arthur to meet morganna. arthur still in shock just followed the young sorcerer listening to him prattle on about magic and the sword and how arthur was the heir. when brought before morganna arthur was almost over taken with her beauty, she was far more beautiful than any women from his village. she welcomed him into the castle with a warm smile.
arthur had no idea how to be noble; he spent a lot of time with morgana trying to learn. he was after all a farmer not a prince… not a king. unknown to him morganna didn’t want to give up her seat of power; she wanted to be queen she had been hoping that no one would ever pull the sword from the stone. she didn’t want the throne to be stolen by a dirty farmer from the south. she tried to convince him to give up his right to throne, telling him that he didn’t want to lead the kingdom. she would be sure to send all the money he wanted for he and his family, they would never want for anything. arthur almost took her offer, which is until word reached him that his family’s farm had been attacked by the army of king gorlois his mother, father, and young brother were killed. his sister was taken captive after all word had reached king gorlois that this was arthur’s home. he thought it would scare him from taking over the kingdom but it didn’t. the act meant war for arthur and he knew the only way he could get his sister back was to be king and march his army to gorlois take back his sister and the land that gorlois had taken over during the war.
he wasn’t king yet but the army was loyal to him and marched with him to the battlefield. it took months of battle but even without a lot training arthur was a skilled leader and swordsman. many assassins tried to kill arthur but thanks to the loyalty of his men and his skills none succeeded, arthur thought gorlois sent the assassins but in reality morganna sent them. he took back land once lost to the kingdom and soon had his army at the gates to king gorlois’s kingdom. gorlois knew that he didn’t have much time, after all he had also heard the prophecy that he would fall to the “once and future king”. gorlois locked himself in the throne room as the castle was being over taken; as arthur entered the throne room gorlois killed his younger sister who was only eleven at the time of her death. in angry arthur killed gorlois and turned to gorlois’ wife he put the sword his her throat, tears in his eyes from the death of his little sister. she didn’t cry she didn’t beg for her life just kneeled down in front of him and bowed her head. arthur took back his sword and told gwaine and the other knights to take her and gorlois’ daughters. gorlois’ kingdom was now part of camelot.
arthur returned to camelot and was crowned king, morganna plotted to somehow be queen. when questioning the queen of the now conquered kingdom arthur found out she was his mother and she finally let him know the entire story behind his birth. arthur didn’t believe her at first but a spell cast over her thanks to merlin made her tell the truth, she repeated the same story. arthur welcomed her as his mother and allowed her to stay in the castle with him and allowing her daughters to be married off to knights he felt fit.
morganna soon decided her best chance was to seduce arthur and marry him. she often dressed in ways just to catch the eye of arthur who after all always had a weakness for women. it didn’t take long before arthur to fall head over heels for the beautiful black haired woman. she often spent nights in arthur’s chambers and soon fell pregnant with his child, as soon as he found out the news of her being with child he agreed to marry her. morganna was happy, she was finally going to be queen like she rightfully deserved. she was raised just as a child of uther raised as a princess and after the death of his two sons the right of rule had gone to her… not the dirty farmer from the south. her plans were finally falling into place now with child with the heir of the kingdom and set to marry the king. arthur truly believed that morganna loved him and that she was only with him because of her love for him. he in turn was devoted to her, making sure she had the best cloths and the best jewelry. that was until he met another woman, she was the daughter of a highborn lord of the kingdom. her father was in camelot on business and had brought his beautiful daughter along. arthur was smitten in one look; he proposed marriage to the lady guinevere instantly forgetting about morganna. he marred guinevere three days later. morganna who had been visiting an old friend returned to the castle to only find out the man she was to married had been married while she was gone. she was angry and confronted the king; he told her that she could stay if she loved him. he told her that she could stay in the castle as his mistress, something that was common in many kingdoms. morganna agreed, only because she was plotting the death of queen guinevere. once she was dead arthur’s attention would be on her once again.
for the next four years arthur lived in happiness, he had his loyal knight the knight of the round table, a loving wife, a loving mistress, and a son mordred. he was very much in love with his wife and started to spend less and less time with his mistress as she wished, soon he no longer invited morganna into his bed and devoted himself to his queen. angered by this morganna planned to do something worse than just killing the queen, she wanted to punish arthur. arthur had sent her to stewart gorlois’s old kingdom, but this made morganna even angrier. this kingdom wasn’t the beautiful kingdom that camelot was; the war had taken a toll. the land was rocky and dark, swamps littered the land and crops hardly grew. morganna filled mordred’s head with nothing but hate for the queen; she would bare sons that would take his rightful place.
while arthur’s land prospered his happy life in camelot was about to come to an end. unknown to him his beloved wife guinevere and his most trusted knight and friend lancelot were having an affair. during a party celebrating the anniversary of winning the war, arthur noticed guinevere was nowhere to be seen. he figured she was still getting dressed. morganna who had come to camelot told arthur about the affair, arthur grew angry with morganna he told her she shouldn’t be spreading any gossip. she said if he didn’t believe her to go to guinevere’s chambers. arthur walked away; he wasn’t about to give into town gossip. the thought tugged at his mind until he finally convinced himself to go check on his wife. he was sure she just wasn’t feeling well. he entered her chamber without a knock and couldn’t believe what he saw. his wife in bed with his good friend lancelot betrayed by both of them he pulled lancelot from the bed and held a sword at his throat. arthur was known for losing his temper with people who betrayed him. it always meant death in his eyes there was nothing worse than betraying the people close to you. he loved lancelot just as he loved his brother gwaine. he couldn’t bring himself to kill him he called in the guards and arrested both guinevere and lancelot.
that day changed arthur from a loving man to a hardened man. he banished lancelot from the kingdom and kept guinevere in the dungeon. soon out of love for guinevere he banished her a year later. he didn’t have it in his heart to kill her but he stripped her of her title and left her with only three silver coins. she was forbidden from ever returning home to her father, if she received help from her family they would also be stripped of their wealth, name, and banished. soon morganna fed up with not being queen raged war against arthur, he was shocked after all he trusted her just as he had trusted the other two traitors in his life.
the curse hit soon after.
