EVERYONE WANTS TO FEEL SAFE
IN THE DARK
He stood at the altar completely still as Belle placed the candied cane on it, a blank face the whole time, and simply stood there. But then Belle left and he looked back to make sure she was gone. He let out a slow breath and closed his eyes, taking a step towards the altar, falling to his knees and his head dropping. For the first time in a long time, he allowed tears to fall, a soft sob falling from his lips.
“I’m sorry Bae.” His voice came out in a strangled sob. “I am sorry…” He trailed off, and when his voice came back it came back as a whisper. “I remember playing catch with you.” He was more talking to the emptiness of the room, addressing his son that worlds away at this very moment, wishing he was here. “You had a really good arm and threw it past me… I couldn’t really run to go get it, but you didn’t seem to mind and would run get it for me. We would talk about your day during dinner, you were always so helpful. You defended me, your coward of a father, to the village, and you wouldn’t stand for it. You were… are so brave. I would look at you and wonder how you could be so brave, and that I wished I could be the man you always wanted as a father.” His lower lip trembled before he stilled it, kneeling there for several moments, the only sound was that of quiet sobs, as tears ran down his golden face.
Finally he stood and used magic to clear his face of the tears and looked at the altar for a moment. “I will find you, Bae. I promise.” And with that he left the room and found his way to the main room where Belle was busy decorating. He wore a smile and swaggered towards her. “Would you like some help?” He picked up some of the tinsel and grinned from ear to ear, his head tilted slightly to the side.
